Child left in van in Walmart parking lot

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - A child's life was saved after a Pine Bluff Walmart shopper busted out a van window.

According to Regina VonTungeln with the Pine Bluff Police Department, Kevin Spink, 46, of Platteville, Wis. was arrested and charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor on June 12 when Walmart employees reported that a child had been left alone in a van. A Walmart shopper broke a window to get into the vehicle and retrieve the child who was reported to be crying and covered in sweat.

VonTungeln said that Spink was in the checkout line with another child and told police that he thought his wife had taken the first child into a separate store with her.

After further investigation, Spink's charge was amended to second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. He was released Wednesday.

Judge orders mother to be held without bond following infant's death

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - A judge has ordered a Pine Bluff mother to be held without bond after her child was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

According to Regina VonTungeln, police were called to a home on South Cedar Street around 8 a.m. Monday in reference to an unresponsive 4-month-old child, named Timothy McKnight. The child was taken to the Jefferson Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at 10 a.m.

VonTungeln said the mother, Latasha Cannon, was taken in for questioning and later arrested for first-degree murder. She is being held without bond.

The McKnight's body has been sent to the crime lab for an autopsy but VonTungeln told THV 11 that the child appeared to be smothered.

The child's grandmother is the one who called 911. She told THV11's Max Seigle that she never saw this coming and called her grandson the "happiest baby."

Cannon is due in court Tuesday morning.

Pine Bluff poultry plant closes, 200 jobs lost

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - The Jefferson County economy received a tough blow this week after a poultry plant that employed around 200 workers closed.

Horizon Foods opened a hen-processing plant in Pine Bluff about a year ago. The company would not comment on the closure when a THV 11 crew visited the plant on Wednesday, but some Jefferson County leaders did talk and called the closing a big surprise.

"You know, I'm as shocked as anyone else," said Jefferson County Judge Dutch King. "What we care about are the people that lost their jobs. We've got to take care of those people and think first and foremost about them."

King's doesn't know why the place closed.

"It was a good hit for us. We went out [and] recruited them, and we made some offers through the economic development tax that was passed," King added.
